Fun Way to Stay Active: Cross Country Skiing

Cross Country Skiing

Cross Country SkiingIf you’re looking for a little adventure and a fun way to stay active, have you considered cross country skiing? Even the words can sound a little overwhelming at first, and we’re not going to lie, it requires some endurance. However, the sport hangs with running, rowing and swimming in the category for sports that burn the most calories per hour in execution. And unlike running, you may have so much fun you don’t realize how hard you are working!

When you take part in this healthy and beneficial sport, you’ll enjoy a low-impact, total body workout. Cross country skiing combines a lower and upper body workout, while pushing and pulling the muscles of each region. It’s the ultimate calorie burner and cardio exercise, not to mention a great antidepressant. Cross country skiing is truly an excellent aerobic workout that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels.

Often known as touring, cross country skiing can be done on short trips at ski resorts on maintained trails or for extended periods by using tents and equipment. Some of the equipment remains the same though, regardless of where you go or how long you plan on skiing.

Of course you will need your skis, which are long and narrow to help distribute your weight and help you move quickly. Cross country skis are usually shorter and narrower and the tip of the ski is often higher. Poles also help with steadiness and propulsion. They are made with aluminum, fiberglass, graphite or carbon fiber. And next comes bindings. They hold or clip the toe of the boot to the ski, and are mounted by screws. There are three primary groups of binding systems for cross country skiing, which include the New Nordic Norm, Salomon Nordic System Profil and SNS Pilot.
