The 17th annual Winter Walk will kick off the Christmas season in high fashion. The not-to-be-missed event is well known for its quirky take on the holidays and for all its amazing entertainment.
It all starts at 5 p.m. with the ringing of the carillon atop the First Presbyterian Church and the sound of a trumpet fanfare. Next comes the Santa Parade, organized by the Hudson Department of Youth. Mr. & Mrs. Claus will travel from the Hudson Opera House to City Hall where they will listen to children’s wishes and hand out free gifts.
But what if you don’t have kids? There’s something for everyone at Winter Walk. Take in the twinkling lights, brightly-decorated shops, horse-drawn wagons, live reindeer, stilt walkers, carolers, hula hoopers, ballroom dancers and African drummers. The music will ring out from within the shops and on the street. You will hear jazz, classic, banjo and harp, in addition to the annual concert with the Coxsackie-Athens Community Band at the First Presbyterian Church. That’s just after the formal kickoff, but the concert is followed by the 15-strong Capital Area Flute Club. When you just didn’t think it could get any bigger, Winter Walk adds belly dancers, the Can Can Girl and the Hudson Valley Performing Arts Center’s ballet troupe. Watch and listen to the Kuumba Dance and Drum ensemble then taste samplings from delicious food vendors. It’s enough to make you hungry just thinking about it.
At the end of the evening, a fireworks display will be launched from Promenade Hill at the foot of Warren Street at 8:15 p.m. While this marks the official end to the event, many businesses stay open long into the night!
Winter Walk is an event you just don’t want to miss. It is produced and presented by the Hudson Opera House, a multi-arts center and major downtown anchor that is housed in an 1855 building that used to be City Hall. Remember, they can’t predict the weather so a snow date has been set for December 14, just in case!
