Here are just a few of the apple farms and orchards you should know about.
Fix Bros. Fruit Farm
The Fix Farm was first established in 1899. It now offers pick-your-own apples, usually during the month of September. The Fix Bros. Fruit Farm is a family operation, which promises to produce high quality fruit. Stop by Fix Brothers Fruit in the heart of the Hudson Valley. It’s located about 130 miles north of New York City and 45 miles south of Albany, New York.
If you are on the hunt for freshly grown fruit, make your way to Taconic Orchards. In business for more than 35 years, they feature 20 varieties of apples over the course of three seasons. Located at 591 Route 82 in Hudson, Taconic Orchards serves locally made cider and offers 10-percent off on Tuesdays to senior citizens and veterans. If the fruit isn’t good, they’ll give you store credit.
Green Acres Farm
This farm has been owned and operated by four generations of the Yandik family since 1915. Their philosophy is to bring only local produce. The produce is either grown on their farm or from their farming neighbors within 10 miles of Hudson, New York. Open July through Thanksgiving, Green Acres Farm produces a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The conventional farm strives to grow everything with a minimal amount of chemical inputs. Again, September is the month for apples.
Don Baker Farm
Welcoming “local pickers” and “city pickers,” the Don Baker Farm boasts fresh-picked taste straight from the orchard. Their Apple U-Pick is usually available in September, but they have not set exact dates for the 2013 season. You can find them at 183 Route 14 in Hudson.
You’ll find at least seven varieties of apples at this small fruit farm in the Hudson Valley from early August through mid October. On the east side of the Rip van Winkle Bridge and slightly south, Smith Farms has over 6,500 new generation trees and canes that offer pick-your-own fruit. All of their fruit is on drip irrigation.
Love Apple Farm
A family-oriented fruit orchard in Ghent, New York, Love Apple Farm has sold tree ripe fruit since 1969. They’re famous for their pick-your-own fruit, but offer fresh ice cream made with Love Apple and local fruit as well. They have a petting zoo and more than 30 kinds of apples.
Pick-your-own apples are available at Samascott Orchards from July to November. They don’t charge an admission fee to the farm, but do ask that your checkout total meets a $5 minimum per person. This family owned and operated farm was started in the early 1900s. They now grow hundreds of varieties of fruits and vegetables. Samascott Orchards is located at 5 Sunset Avenue in Kinderhook, New York.
